John had the very important job of preparing the people to hear and accept the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

He went to the desert and prayed and fasted to make himself ready to hear and understand the Word of God. He also studied with other scholars and read the sacred scrolls and scriptures so that he would know when prophecy was being fulfilled.
