Today, we'll dive into travel, Greek houses and gods & goddesses!

Traveling By Boats
Remember what we learned about the geography of Greece? The country is made up of a peninsula and tiny islands! That meant that Ancient Greeks traveled mostly by boat.

Ancient Greek Boats
Greeks used a special boat called a trireme.
It only traveled 6mph (as fast as a human can run).
Greek sailors used heavy stones with a hole in the middle that was tied to a rope as an anchor.
Boats were built from wood from trees like pine trees, fir trees, and cyprus trees.

The Ancient Greeks lived in houses made from sun-dried mud brick. Roofs were made of baked clay tiles.
Houses were built around a center courtyard with the main rooms opening out to it.

The Ancient Greeks were polytheistic, which means they believed in many gods.
Greeks built beautiful temples & statues to the gods. To them, a temple was a god's home on earth.

Temples in Athens were built from expensive white marble & decorated with beautiful statues.

Greek Gods
Ancient Greeks believed that gods and goddesses looked like humans but had super powers. For example, gods did not grow old or die. Gods also had the power to help or hurt them. That is why, these Ancient people prayed daily and asked for help.

Greek Myths
Myths are stories about the gods and goddesses. Myths and other stories about heroes, gods, and animals were a huge part of life in Greece. Most myths taught an important life lesson or explained something in nature that was puzzling to them.

Zeus
Zeus was the god of the sky.
He was the ruler over all the other gods. It was believed he controlled the sky. Zeus created storms, lightning, rain, snow, and darkness in the sky.
He was shown throwing a
thunderbolt when he was unhappy with people on Earth who did wrong.

Poseidon
Poseidon is the god of the sea. He protected all sea life. He was the brother of Zeus. He used a trident as a weapon and could use it to
create earthquakes. According to their myths, he also created the first horse and was considered god of the horses.

He was the god of the grape

He also had a role in the Greek theatre and entertainment.
