2

When we multiply fractions by a whole number we should:

  • Draw bar models to represent the multiplication problem.

  • Show the multiplication on a number line.

  • Sometimes we may need to change our answer from a fraction greater than 1 (an improper fraction) to a mixed number.

3

Betsy ordered 3 pizzas for her party. 2/3 of the pizzas were left over. How many pizzas were left over?

Use a drawing to show 2/3 x 3. What answer did you get?

4

The answer would be 6/3. However, that is a fraction greater than 1, so I need to change it into a mixed number.

By decomposing 6/3, I can say it is 3/3 + 3/3 which equals 2.
