  • When any form of tissue, under certain circumstances, avoid breaking down.

  • Can be filled in and hardened by sediment over time.

  • When sediment fills in or around a fossil.

  • Molds cover hard tissue, leaving an imprint.

  • Casts are molds that were filled in with extra sediment.
