Review of the 5 Paragraph Essay

Pre-Writing

• Topic - The subject that the paper is about

• Only one (1) topic per essay

• Find reliable sources about your topic from places like SIRS

Introduction Paragraph

• First part of the essay

• Hook - First sentence that captures the readers attention

• Background Information - Two or three sentences to give some basic info about the topic

• Thesis - Last sentence of the introduction which states your position and arguments

Body Paragraphs

• Three (3) body paragraphs, each is 5 - 8 sentences long

• One argument per body paragraph

• Topic sentence - First sentence of each paragraph which introduces the main idea of the paragraph

• Explain the argument with evidence from other source and explanation in your own words

• Conclusion sentence - Last sentence of each paragraph which restates argument and wraps up paragraph

Conclusion Paragraph

• Last paragraph of the essay

• Transition sentence - First sentence that restate the thesis

• 2 - 3 sentences that summarize the main arguments and why they're important

• Universal message - Final thought about why this is an important topic that can reach many people

Works Cited

• Cite all sources using MLA citation

• Make sure you used in-text citations (Author's Last Name) in your essay any time you used a quotation or any information from a source
