Cell Division and cell cycle

2

Cells divide themselves to do 4 specific functions

3

4 Functions for Cell Division

  • Repair cells

  • Replace cells

  • Reproduce cells

  • Grow cells

4

Cell cycle

  • this is the regular sequence of events in which the cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter cells .

  • After this cycle is complete, each daughter cells begin the cycle again

5

Process of Cell Cycle

  • The cycle has 3 stages

  • and has steps for each stage that need to take place before the next stage starts.

Stage 1: Interphase

  • during this stage the cell grows, makes a copy of its DNA and prepares to divide into two cells.

  • the three steps for this phase are

  • 1. grow: cell grows to it full size and produces organelles for split

  • 2. Replication: makes a copy of its DNA to pass on at the split.

  • 3. Preparing for division: once DNA replicated produces what it needs to split in two

Stage 2: Mitosis

  • once interphase ends the next stage is Mitosis: the cell's nucleus divides into two new nuclei and one set of DNA is distributed into each daughter cell.

  • There are 4 steps that need to take place in this stage.

11

4 steps During Mitosis

  • 1. Prophase: DNA condenses into seperate chromosomes.

  • 2. Metaphase: chromosomes line up along the center of the cell. Chromatids line up for each cell.

  • 3. Anaphase: fibers connect to the centioles pull the chromatids apart into each side of the cell.

  • 4. Telophase: chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell, the nuclear membrane reforms around the DNA to create two new Nuclei.

Stage 3: Cytokinesis

  • the final stage of cell cycle is Cytokinesis: this stage completes the process. The cell's cytoplasm divides distributing the organelles into each of the two daughter cells.

  • The only step of this stage is to separate the two daughter cells from each other to create two separate daughter cells.
