How to solve for a variable in an inequality

One step inequalities

• Recall how to solve a one step equation: We perform the inverse (opposite) operation to both sides of the equal sign to solve.

• The same process is used with inequalities except we have a > < $\le\ge$  

Example solving one step inequalities

•  $6x\le18$  We have multiplication occuring, so we will divide both sides by 6 to solve.

•  $\frac{6x}{6}\le\frac{18}{6}$  Here we are dividing both sides by 6.

•  $x\le3$
