Estimating Word Problems

  • If you're estimating the price of gas, round using the rule "5 or more, raise the score; 4 or less, let it rest".

  • If you're estimating how much money each person gets when a total has been divided, always ROUND DOWN.

  • If you're estimating how much you can afford, always ROUND DOWN.

  • If you're estimating how many containers you will need, always ROUND UP.

Word Problems About Averages

  • To find the average, you add up all of the numbers and divide by how many numbers there were.

  • If you know 4 of the numbers and want to find what the 5th number needs to be in order to get a certain average, set it up like this: 45+30+32+36+x5=40\frac{45+30+32+36+x}{5}=40

  • To solve, multiply both sides by the denominator, and then subtract to get x by itself.

Multiple Choice

Andrew's test grades so far are 60, 72, 65, and 78. What does Andrew need to make on his next test in order to have a 70 average?

Perimeter Word Problems

  • To find perimeter, you add up all of the side lengths.

  • If you don't know what the side lengths are, write an algebraic expression that relates one side to the other.

  • Use that algebraic expression to write an equation set equal to the perimeter.

  • Solve for the first side, then use that side to find the other length.

  • Remember, your side lengths should all add up to equal the perimeter!
