Response to an advert ​

This type of cover letter you send along with your CV or application form and is in answer to a particular job advert. The important thing in the cover letter is to show that your skills match those for the job advert.

Speculative Cover Letter

This type of cover letter is sent to a company you would be interested in working for. You are using it to enquire about possible job opportunities that fit your skills. You have to give a general area you are interested in working in and send it along with your CV.

The format

  • Start off by stating what position you’re applying for and where you saw the advert

  • Explain why you are interested in this line of work and show you know what the role is likely to involve

  • Show you’ve done your homework about the company/organisation. What about THEM attracts you?

  • Outline why you are perfect for the role – detail experience, qualities and skills. A real-life example can be useful.

  • Let the employer know when you can be interviewed
