Passive Voice Structures

The main structure for the passive voice is :

• Subject + (tense auxiliary) + be + v3 (past participle)

• Oil is exported from Kuwait.

• Kuwait was invaded in 1990.

• The office is being redecorated this month.

Present Simple Passive

• Subject + am/are/is + v3 (past participle)

  Arabic is spoken in the Middle East.

• Shoes aren't worn inside houses in Thailand.

• Am I allowed to smoke here?

Present Continuous Passive

• Subject + is/are + being + v3 (past participle)

• My office is being cleaned right now.

• What is being taught today?

Past Simple Passive

• Subject + was/were + v3 (past participle)

• My house was burgled last night.

• The holidays weren't approved by the management.

Past Continuous Passive

• Subject + was/were + being + v3 (past participle)

• What speed was the car being driven at?

• The car was being driven at over 100mph.

Present Perfect Passive

• Subject + have/has + been + v3 (past participle)

• Oh no! My car has been stolen!

• Has the report been sent to the boss?

• The students haven't been given their books yet.

Future Simple Passive

• Subject + will + be + v3 (past participle)

• The final exam will be taken at the ACK Campus.

• Mobile phones won't be allowed in the test room.

• When will the grades be given to the students?
