A phrasal verb is a verb that consists of the main verb and a particle.

  • e.g. to 'look up'

  • look = verb up = particle

  • They can have different meanings.

Phrasal verbs can be both literal and idiomatic. For example 'look up'.

  • I looked up the tree, but I couldn't see my cat. (literal - physically looked up)

  • I looked up the answer on Google. (idiomatic)
