  • The proclamation freed all Confederate slaves

African Americans Participate in the War

  • The USA started enlisting African Americans into the military as laborers in 1862

  • By 1863 there were African American combat units

  • The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was the most famous African American unit and lost half of their men attacking Fort Wagner in South Carolina

  • 180,000 African Americans served in the Civil War for the Union and they made $3 a month less than white soldiers until Congress passed a law giving them equal pay

  • The CSA did not treat African American Union soldiers well when they were captured and most were returned to slavery
