Meaning of Subject: ​

Subject means the person or thing about whom the statement is being made.​ It is usually a noun or pronoun.​

Examples of Subject :​


  • Naman rides bicycle.​

  • Manali is a beautiful place to visit.​

  • He plays football.

  • Radha and Meera are coming home.

VERB​

Meaning of verb:​

It means the action that is being performed by the subject.​

Examples of Verb 

  • Naman rides bicycle.​

  • Varun cooks pasta.

  • Snehal and soni eat maggi.

  • They clean kitchen.

Subject Verb Agreement:

Joining the two words,we get Subject Verb Agreement which meanswhen placed togetherin a sentence,they should match or agree.​


​ Agreement  or concord happens when a word changes its form depending on other words to which it relates.​

Singular and Plural (Subject and Verb ):

Singular Subject


It represents one person, place or thing.​ ​


Example:


Deepa takes dancing classes.

  • PLURAL VERBS DON’T TAKE “s” BEHIND THEM​

LESSON NO. 1 -“AND”​

  • ​ When a statement has two or more subjects which are joined by “and” , we use plural verb.​ ​

  • Example:​

  • Harshada and Kunal go to market every sunday.

LESSON NO. 2 -“OR”​

  • When a statement has two or more subjects which are joined by  “OR”, we use singular verb.​ ​

  • Example:​ ​

  • Harshada or Kunal goes to market every sunday. ​

  • CHOICE is implied here.​

EXAMPLES:

  • Harshada and Chetna ___ (is/are) best friends.​ ​

  • Either Harshada or Snehal ___ (is/are) your best friend.​ ​

  • Dogs ___ (and/or) cats are pet animals.​ ​

  • Neither Naman nor Radha ___ (like/likes) to play with dogs.​ ​ ​

LESSON NO.3 -

“ACCOMPANYING EXPRESSIONS”

  • A singular subject , although being followed by “alongwith”, ”as well as”, ”in addition to”, are still singular subjects taking singular verbs.​

  • ​ Example :​ ​

  • Pankaj, alongwith his friends, goes for a bike ride.​ ​

  • Reeta, as well as Sneha, is expected shortly.

LESSON NO. 4 -“TRICKY SINGULAR”​

  • Words like everybody/nobody, everyone/no one/none, may sound plural subjects but are singular subjects and take singular verbs with them​

  • It is looked as one whole body or one individual unit.​ ​

  • Example:​

  • Everyone likes tea.​

  • No one reads boring novels.​

  • 500 rupees is a high price to pay.

  • Nobody knows the trouble I've seen.

COLLECTIVE NOUNS:​

  • Examples:​

  • Pride of lions roar loud.​

  • Bunch of keys lay underneath.​ ​

  • Galaxy of stars shine bright.​

LESSON NO. 5 -“TRICKY PLURAL”​

  • A word that sounds singular but it is taken as plural will take plural verb​ ​

  • Example:​

  • The women are in the office.​

  • My teeth are falling.​

  • My feet smell filthy.​

LESSON NO. 6 -“INVERSE SENTENCE”​

  • Sentences which begin with “there” or ”this” have verb before subject comes in the sentence​

  • Example:​

  • There is a question.​

  • There are many questions.​

  • Here are the chocolates.

  • There is a big puddle on the road.

  • Context of the sentence should be seen here.​
