An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

Typically, an adverb will tell us more about the manner, time, place, or degree

of something, answering questions such as how , when, or where.

  • Example:

  •  Mr. Cruz clearly explained the direction of the test to the

    pupils.(manner)

17

1. Adverb of Manner - tells how an action is done. It modifies verbs. It answers the question "How."

  • The suffix -ly is added to the end of adjective to form an adverb.

However, not all adverbs of manner end with -ly. These are the

following examples: well, fast, hard, and straight. Most of

these can be also used as adjective.

  • Example: He reads fast(adverb)

  • He is a fast reader(adjective)
