In the Second half of the 1800s...
Most immigrants came from southern and Eastern Europe.
This included mainly catholic and jewish people from Italy and Russia.
In the 1890s, large numbers of African American people from the south moved to northern cities to work in factories.
This movement became known as the great migration.
The Harlem area of NYC became the largest African American community in the U.S.

The Statue of Liberty
This was a gift to the people of the United States from the people of France. It was built by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi. The statue was first shown to the public on. October 26, 1886.

The Statue represents hope for immigrants as they passed by it on their way to ellis island.
One Polish man said "The bigness of Ms. Liberty overcame us. No one spoke a word for she was like a goddess and we knew she represented the... country which was to become our home."
