What is an integer?

An integer is any whole number (positive or negative) and zero.

When determining if a number is an integer, make sure it is in it's simplest form.

  • If a number is written as a decimal like 25.00, it is equivalent to 25. That is a whole number.

  • If an improper fraction can be simplified to a whole number, then it is representing an integer. -15/3 is simplified to -5.

What are opposites?

Absolute value means the distance from 0.

Opposites have the same absolute value.

The absolute value of 6 is 6 and -6 is 6. They are both 6 away from 0.
