1. not...until

• 否定句型 not…until…指動作「直到……才發生」。

• The United States did not enter World War II until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941.

  美國直到 1941 年日本人轟炸珍珠港才加入第二次世界大戰。

• 若將否定時間副詞 Not until...放置於句首，則主要子句中的主詞必須與助動詞或be動詞倒裝。

  直到最後一位表演者離開舞臺，觀眾才停止鼓掌。

(複數) Some...others....still others...

• 本句型用於有眾多項目，但只舉出其中三項時的列舉。

• Many people came to the victim’s rescue. One grabbed the robber. Another took the wallet back from him. Still another called the police.

  許多人來拯救受害者。一人抓住搶匪。另一人從他手中搶回錢包。還有一人報警。

• The library has an extensive collection of DVDs. Some are movies. Others are documentaries. Still others are concert recordings.

3. S+V....by + Ving

• 本句型中的by + V-ing為副詞，意思是「藉由……」，說明達成目標的方法。by + V-ing也可以放於句首。

• Global warming can be slowed by working less.

  藉著少工作一些，或許可減緩全球暖化。

4. Instead, S+V....

• 轉折詞 instead的 意思是「反而；相反地」。instead是副詞，可置於句首或句尾。

• Karen didn’t complain. Instead, she focused her energy on solving the problem.

  Karen沒有抱怨。相反地，她集中精神在解決問題。

• Instead of complaining, Karen focused her energy on solving the problem.
