Memorize indefinite pronouns

These pronouns are always singular

These pronouns are always plural

These pronouns can be either singular or plural

-All of that book was interesting, wasn’t it?

If singular antecedent are joined by and, use a plural pronoun

• Isaac and Khaled told me they were in the car.

• Isaac and Khaled will bring their controllers.

If singular antecedents are joined by or or nore, use a singular pronoun

• Either Gamila or Mariam will bring her controller.

Part 2: Using Verbs Correctly

Regular Verbs

• verbs that form the past and past participle by adding –d or –ed

Irregular Verbs

•verbs that form the past or past participle in some other way than –d or –ed

•be careful with the past participle on irregular verbs (when have or has comes before the verb)

Tense

• make sure the verbs in your sentence all match with tense, or the time in which an action took place

Part 3: Using Modifiers Correctly

Degrees of comparison

• Positive degree: used when at least one thing is being described.

  ○The base form of the modifier

• Comparative degree: when two things are being compared

  ○Add either -er or more

• Superlative degree: used when three or more things are being compared

  ○Add either -est or most

Avoid Double Comparisons

• Double comparison = using both -er and more or -est and most

• Incorrect: This is her most finest performance.

• Correct: This is her finest performance.

Avoid Double Negatives

• Double negative = using two or more negative words to express one idea.

• Incorrect: We could not barely move.

• Correct: We could barely move. / We could not move.

Main Rule: A modifier should be placed as close to the word it modifies as possible

• Smelling like old shoes, Tina threw away the milk.

• Tina threw away the milk that smelled like old shoes.
