Review: French -er,

-re, -ger, and -cer verbs

Slide image

2

How to conjugate -er verbs

  • 1. Remove the ending (-er) to find the verb stem

  • 2. Determine the appropriate subject pronoun

  • 3. Add the corresponding ending

Slide image

3

Par example, let's translate the phrase "they like dogs"

  • The verb for "to like" is aimer. First, to find the stem, I remove the -er ending to find the stem (aim)

  • Next, I determine the subject/subject pronoun. The subject of the sentence is they, which translates to ils

  • Next, I add the verb ending for ils (ent) to my verb stem (aiment)

  • Finally, I put it all together and translate the remainder of the phrase: Ils aiment les chiens

4

When the subject of the sentences is a person (i.e.: their name) rather than a subject pronoun, you have to determine which subject pronoun matches the subject in order to find the correct verb ending.

Par example, the name Lucas would correspond with the subject pronoun for he (il)

5

Let's translate: Jill works at the supermarket

  • The verb for "to work" is travailler, so to find the stem I would remove the -er to find travaill

  • Jill corresponds to the subject pronoun for she (elle), so I would use the verb ending e

  • Put it all together-- Jill travaille au supermarché

11

Par example, let's translate the phrase "We answer the questions"

  • The verb for to answer is répondre, so I would find the stem by removing the -re ending (répond)

  • The subject pronoun for we is nous, so my verb ending would be ons

-ger and -cer exceptions

  • As we learned a few weeks ago, verbs that end in -ger and -cer are conjugated irregularly ONLY in the NOUS form

  • When conjugating a verb that ends in -ger, you MUST add an extra E to the end of the stem before adding the ending (ons)

Slide image

17

-ger and -cer exceptions

  • When conjugating a verb that ends in -cer, you MUST change the c BEFORE the ending (ons) to a ç

  • Both of these exceptions turn a hard-sounding consonate into a softer-sounding one, which is more common in French!
