TYPES OF MIXTURES
There are two types of mixtures: Heterogeneous and Homogeneous mixtures.
Heterogeneous mixtures can be either colloids or suspensions.
Solutions are the only type of homogeneous mixtures.
3
SOLUTIONS
A solution is a mixture of two or more substances resulting in a mixture that has the same composition and properties throughout
4
SOLUTION
Solution are made by dissolving a solute into a solvent.
The solvent is the dissolving medium while the solute is the substance that is dissolved in a solution.
5
SOLUTIONS
Solutes and solvents can be solid, liquid or gas and each state of matter can combine with either itself or another state of matter to make a solution

COLLOIDS
A colloid is a mixture in which one substance of insoluble particles are are evenly dispersed throughout another substance.
The colloidal particles make up the dispersed phase, and water (or other liquids, solids or gases) is the dispersing medium.
12
COLLOIDS
Similar to solutions, colloids can be classified according to their dispersed phase and dispersed medium.

16
SUSPENSION
If the particles in a dispersing medium are so large that they settle out unless the mixture is constantly stirred or agitated, the mixture is called a suspension.
The particles in suspension can be separated from heterogeneous mixtures by passing the mixture through a filter.
17
TYNDALL EFFECT
The Tyndall effect occurs when light is scattered by colloidal particles dispersed in a transparent medium.
This effect is greatly evident in colloidal dispersion, slightly evident in suspensions and not evident in solutions.
18
ELECTROLYTES AND NON ELECTROLYTES
A substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts electric current is called an electrolyte.
A substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that does not conduct an electric current is called a nonelectrolyte.
Ionic compounds and certain highly polar molecular substances are electrolytes, while low polar substance are non electrolytes.
