Read the passage.

Mars Rovers: Spirit and Opportunity

In 2004, two robotic rovers named Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars. The rovers were robotic geologists. They had a goal to analyze the rocks and soil of Mars to provide information about the planet’s history. But engineers had many problems to solve in order to get these rovers to work on Mars.

Protecting the Rovers

Before the rovers could roam Mars’ surface and analyze rocks, they had to safely land on the planet. If the rovers broke upon landing, there would be no way to fix them. To protect the rovers, each had a landing craft that was protected by airbags that provided a soft, protective landing for the rovers. Once the landing crafts stopped moving, the airbags deflated and allowed the rovers to leave the landing craft.

Maintaining Power

Each rover needed power to operate. But they could not carry an unlimited number of batteries with them on the mission. As a result, engineers built the rovers with large solar panels used to recharge two onboard batteries. The solar panels looked like wings that converted the sun’s light into energy to power the rovers.

Long-Lasting Missions

The missions of Spirit and Opportunity were originally planned to last 90 days. Both outlasted those 90 days by years! Spirit roamed on Mars’ surface for more than six years. Opportunity was still sending transmissions back to Earth in 2018! Finally, in 2019, NASA closed Opportunity’s mission.
