MEANING

We use a superlative to say that a thing or person is the most of a group.

CHARACTERISTICS

• SHORT ADJECTIVES ENDING IN -EST

• LONG ADJECTIVES WE ADD "MOST"

• BEFORE ANY TYPE OF ADJECTIVE WE NEED TO ADD THE ARTICLE "THE"

• ESTRUCTURA GRAMATICAL PARA ADJETIVO CORTO: SUJETO+ VERBO TO BE + THE + ADJETIIVO TERMINADO EN -EST + COMPLEMENTO

• ESTRUCTURA ADJETIVO LARGO: SUJETO+ VERBO TO BE+ THE MOST + ADJETIVO + COMPLEMENTO.

EXAMPLES

• She's the most beautiful girl in the classroom.

• John and Lisa are the most intelligent students here.

• The whale is one of the biggest animals on earth

• My father is the most elegant man in my family

• Carlos is the tallest man in the group

• This is the saddest movie I have ever seen.

RECCOMENDATIONS

• FOR SHORT ADJECTIVES WE NEED TO DOUBLE THE LAST CONSONANT IF THERE IS A VOWEL IN BETWEEN.

• BIG --- BIGGEST

• SAD --- SADDEST

• THIN --- THINNEST

• FAT --- FATTEST

• SHORT ADJECTIVES ENDING IN -Y WE CHANGE THE -Y FOR -IEST.

• EXAMPLE: FUNNY --- FUNNIEST

• IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES SUCH AS, GOOD, BAD, FAR, LITTLE, ETC. THEY ALL CHANGE AS IN THE COMPARATIVES.

We use as + adjective/adverb + as to make comparisons when the things we are comparing are equal in some way:

EXAMPLES:

• The world’s biggest bull is as big as a small elephant.

• The weather this summer is as bad as last year. It hasn’t stopped raining for weeks.

• You have to unwrap it as carefully as you can. It’s quite fragile.

• My brother is as tall as my father.

My car is as beautiful as my father's.

NO EQUAL COMPARISONS

• WE USE THE LITTLE WORD "NOT"

• My mom is not as tall as my sister
