Multiple Choice

In the tally table question below, which is the correct way to start?

1
2
3

12

Why is this incorrect?

  • Looking for all "dogs" first then looking for all "cats" second....etc

  • That means you will be looking through all the information 7 times! Its easy to make mistakes that way.

Slide image

13

Why is this incorrect?

  • Writing the next number every time you meet that type.

  • It is very likely that you will run out of room... and when you write numbers closer together its easy to get confused

Slide image

14

Why is this CORRECT?

  • Working through the data once and marking each one off as you go.

  • Its easy to keep track of where you are up to and you are less likely to make mistakes

Here is the original question

Can you copy and complete the table accurately?

Multiple Choice

Which is the correctly completed frequency table?

17

Constructing a Bar Chart

  • Demonstrates the frequency for each category.

  • Each bar should be an equal width and have equal spaces between.

18

Slide image

19

Error 1: Title

The title is incomplete and doesn't really tell us what the chart shows.

Slide image

20

Error 2: Axis

  • The axis should always be numbered evenly.

  • This chart has missed the 5 .

Slide image

21

Error 3: Axis Label

  • This needs to clearly tell people how many.

  • As a minimum you can call this "frequency".

Slide image

22

Error 4: Axis

  • The base line has not been numbered.

  • You should label 0 - don't just assume people know it.

Slide image

23

Error 5: Bar Width

  • Check each bar has the same width.

Slide image

24

Error 6: Spellings

  • Edward is spelled incorrectly.

  • Spelling is important - especially when the name is already on the page for you!

Slide image

25

Error 7: Between Bars

  • Just like each bar should have an equal width, all bars should be evenly spaced.

Slide image

26

Error 8: Frequencies

  • Check that the height of the bar matches the information in the frequency table.

27

Constructing a Pictogram

A Pictogram demonstrates frequency using icons.

This type of chart has some limitations because if the frequency is a huge number (like 50) this would be terrible to draw and count!

Slide image

28

Constructing a Pictogram

A pictogram icon doesn't have to represent one item.

You need to use a key to demonstrate how you have used each picture.

What does half a cupcake mean?

Slide image

29

30

ANSWERS

  • 12 students had a sandwich. (because each icon means 3)

  • If each picture means 3 - what does half a picture mean? (we can't have 1.5 people!)

  • Our choice of icon needs to be something that can be shared equally into parts!

1

It would be better to use the square for 10 because we wouldn't need as many squares.

2

It would be better to use the square for two so that it is easy to see that half of the square means 1.

3

There is nothing wrong with using the square for 8.

4

Using a square for 8 is good to show 4 and 2 but it will be difficult to show 1, 3, 5 or 7
