What are the imaginary lines on the Earth called ?

  • The Imaginary lines on the Earth are called Longitudes and Latitudes.

  • Let's learn about these imaginary lines.

7

Latitudes

Latitudes are the horizontal imaginary that runs from West to East till the northern most part of the Earth called North Pole and the Southern most part of the Earth called South pole. The longest latitude is the Equator at 0 ° . It is also called the Great Circle. It divides the Earth into two parts, Northern & Southern Hemisphere. The North part of the Earth is called Northern Hemisphere and the Southern part is called Southern Hemisphere. The latitudes lines do not intersect in each other so they are called as parallels of latitudes. There are 180 lines of latitudes, 90 in North and 90 in South.

Multiple Choice

How much is the degree of Tropic of Cancer-

1

23 12° N\frac{1}{2}\degree\ N

2

23 12° S\frac{1}{2}\degree\ S

11

Heat Zones

  • The All important lines we have learn in the lines of latitudes are been used to measure temperature of the place.

  • The Heat Zones are been divided into three parts-

  • Torrid Zone

  • Temperate Zone

  • Frigid Zone

12

Torrid Zone-

  • Torrid Zone lies between the Tropic of Cancer in the North and Tropic of Capricorn in the South. The Equator falls in this Zone. Since this region receives the direct rays of the Sun throughout the year, it is the hottest Zone.

13

The red highlighted Zone is the Torrid Zone

14

Temperate Zone-

  • The temperate Zone is a zone of moderate temperatures. The North Temperate Zone lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Artic Circle while the South Temperate Zone lies between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle. The rays of the Sun reach the Earth surface at a slanted rays andgle throughout the year.

15

The red highlighted Zone are the Temperate Zones

16

Frigid Zone-

  • The Frigid Zone is a very cold zone. The North Frigid Zone lies between the Artic Circle and the North Pole while the South Frigid Zone lies between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole. These regions are extremely cold & permanently frozen because the Sun's rays reach the Earth's surface at an extremely slanted angle.
