What is Waste ?
Waste is a substance which is of no use for us and we try to discard.

What is Garbage ?
Garbage is an unwanted or undesired material or substance. It is also reffered as rubbish, trash or junk.

Types of Waste
Biodegradable Waste - Waste that gets decayed and decomposed naturally by the action of tiny microorganisms found in soil are called Biodegradable Waste.
Non-Biodegradable Waste - Waste that does not get decayed and decomposed naturally. They cause a lot of harm to the environment but can be recycled.

Composting
Converting plant and animal waste including that from kitchen, into manure is called Composting.
Composting recycles organic household waste and manures into an extremely useful humus like, soil end product called Compost.

The method of preparing compost with the help of Red worms is called Vermi-Composting.

Activity 1 - Steps for Vermi-Composting
Dig a pit or take a wooden box ( 30 cm Deep )
Spread a net or chicken mesh or a thick layer of sand ( 1-2 m thick ) at the bottom of the pit or the box
Spread some vegetable waste on top of this layer ( peels of fruits, leaves, husk or paper )
Sprinkle some water to make the layer wet
Do not put access water and do not press the layer of waste, so that it has sufficient air and moisture
Put some red worms in the pit and cover loosely with a Bio-degradable object

Red Worms do not have teeth. They have a structure called 'Gizzards' in their digestive , which helps them in grinding their food.

Red Worms do not have teeth. They have a structure called 'Gizzards', which helps them in grinding their food.
Red worms do not survive in very hot or very cold surroundings.
They also need moisture around them.
The worms are put into the pit containing the useful component of the garbage.
The worms that convert the garbage into useable compost that can be used in gardens or fields for the plants and crops.

Recycling involves processing used materials into new products in order to prevent the waste of potentially useful materials.
We can recycle waste paper and maki it into new products. Paper suitable for recycling is called "Scrap Paper".

Basic propose of packaging is to protect the product from tampering and to maintain it freshness and purity. Unfortunately, a large value of packaging material goes into waste and is thrown in the dustbin/trashcan.
