2

What is this ?

  • A huge magnet!

Slide image

3

Open Ended

Give examples of uses for magnets. Think about things you might have around your house.

4

Magnets

  • Magnets are useful!

  • They can be used to hold cupboard doors shut

  • They are used in electric motors

  • They are used in headphones and loudspeakers

  • They have fun uses - like magnetic letters!

5

Permanent Magnets

  • Permanent magnets come in all shapes and sizes

  • They can be used to attract metal objects such as paperclips

  • A permanent magnet is one that stays magnetized for a long time (it doesn't stop being a magnet after it is used)

Slide image

6

Magnetic materials

  • Some materials are attracted by magnets, some are not

  • A material which is attracted by magnets is called a magnetic material

Slide image

7

Open Ended

Is every type of metal magnetic? If you don't know - Google it now! Give some examples.

8

Magnetic metals

  • Iron is a magnetic material. Steel is mostly made of iron, so most types of steel are magnetic too

  • Nickel and cobalt are two other magnetic metals

  • Many strong magnets are made from a metal called neodymium

9

Open Ended

Give 3 examples of magnetic metals

10

Aluminium and tin are non-magnetic metals

  • The picture shows how steel and aluminium cans can be separated using a powerful magnet
