Grammar : Passive Voice 1 pg 83

- To emphasise the action rather than who or what is responsible for it

- Is formed with the verb 'be' in the appropriate form and the past participle of the verb of the sentence (is/are/am/was/were + past participle)

- The person who causes or carries out the action is called an 'agent' and is preceded by the preposition 'by'

20

Note : we usually omit the 'agent'

- when the action interests us more than the agent

- when we don't know the agent

- when it is easy to figure out who the agent is

e.g. The bank was robbed! (by someone who we do not know)

English is spoken in Australis. (by people)

28

2. Direct obj (subject) + verb 'be' + past participle + to + indirect object
