The life cycle of butterfly

  • Butterflies lay eggs on leaves.

  • When an egg hatches, a caterpillar comes out. Caterpillars eat leaves.

  • The caterpillar will shed its skin by moulting. Then new skin comes out.

The caterpillar forms into a pupa

  • Inside the pupa, the caterpillar changes into a beautiful butterfly.

  • This change is called metamorphosis

A butterfly comes out

  • The butterfly hangs upside down to dry its wings. Its wings are soft and wet at first.

  • After a few hours it can fly and find a mate.

  • After mating, it lays eggs on the leaf of a plant.
