  • a form of verb usually ending in -ing or -ed

  • used to describe or modify the noun

  • e.g. Instead of using "laughing" to indicate an act i.e. "The boy is laughing", use it to describe the boy i.e. "The laughing boy"

Participial phrase

  • A group of words consisting of a participle and the modifier(s) and/or (pro)noun(s) or noun phrase(s) that function as the direct object(s), indirect object(s), or complement(s) of the action or state expressed in the participle, such as:

  • Removing his coat, Jack rushed to the river.

  • The participial phrase functions as an adjective modifying Jack.

Present Participle 

  • Two actions happening at the same time. e.g. Keeping her eyes peeled on the board, Jane listened to her teacher attentively.

  • One action is followed by another instantly. e.g. Shrugging on his coat, he hurried out the door while munching on a piece of burnt toast.

  • Reason for another action. e.g. Feeling guilty, she decided to come clean about cheating in the test.
