Meet the Vertebrates

  • vertebrates = animals with a backbone

  • named after the vertebrae which make up the spine

  • in Linnean classification system, they are in the phylum Chordata - because of the spinal cord

  • We put them in 5 different classes - fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals

Meet the Invertebrates

- invertebrates = without a backbone

- some have no bones at all!

- many have exoskeletons (not made of bone)

- we can break them down into many different groups (but we don't need to remember these)

- worms, insects, sea animals (jellyfish, coral), sponges, snails, spiders etc.

Ectotherm and Endotherm

  • Ectotherm = relies on the environment to regulate it body temperature (cold-blooded)

  • Endotherm = able to regulate their own body temperature (warm-blooded)

  • We are endotherms, because we have systems within our body that regulate its temperature - sweat, produce heat, shivering, vaso
