2

Electrolysis of Molten Sodium chloride (NaCl)

NaCl --> Na+ + Cl-

Reaction at Cathode: Na+ + 1e- --> Na

Reaction at Anode: 2Cl- --> Cl2 + 2e-

By the electrolysis of molten sodium chloride, Sodium(Na) is formed at the cathode and chlorine((Cl2) at the anode

3

Electrolysis of Sodium chloride Solution

NaCl solution contains Na+ ions, Cl- ions and H2O(water)

Reaction at Cathode: 2H2O + 2e- --> H2 + 2OH-

Reaction at Anode: 2Cl- --> Cl2 + 2e-

Thus, Hydrogen(H2) is formed at Cathode, and Chlorine(Cl2) at the Anode.

The remaining solution is sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

4

Multiple Choice

When an aqeous solution of sodium chloride is electrolysed, .......... is obtained at the cathode

1

Sodium

2

Chlorine

3

Hydrogen

4

Sodium hydroxide

5

Multiple Choice

The equation for the reaction at the cathode during the electrolysis of NaCl solution is
