Learning Materials

  • Giving advice

  • Making offers

  • Modals; should, can

3

Giving Advice

4

We use modals when we want to give advice/recommendations or to ask for advice. The modals often used in giving advice are 'should' and 'ought to'.

  • You should do some exercise.

  • it's very late. The kids ought to go to bed by now.

  • We should take this route. It will save us more time.

  • Should I go there alone?

  • What should we do?

5

Making Offers

6

In making offers, either to offer something or to offer help, we can also use modals. The modals often used in making offers are 'can' and 'would'.

  • Would you like something to drink?

  • What can I do for you?

  • Can I help You?

  • I can drive if you like.

7

Should is most commonly used to make recommendations or give advice. It can also be used to express obligations as well as expectations. The modal 'should' behaves quite irregularly in the past and the future. Here are some examples:

  • People with high cholesterol should eat low-fat foods.

  • Frank should have eaten low-fat foods. That might have prevented his heart attack.

  • You really should start eating better.

8

Can is one of the most commonly used modal verb in English. It can be used to express abilities or opportunities, to informally request or offer permission, and to show possibilities or impossibilities. Here's a comparison on 'can' usage in permission, a request, and an offer.

  • I can't drink a coke. My mom doesn't allow it. [permission]

  • Can I have a glass of coke? [request]

  • Can I get you something to drink? A coke maybe? [offer]
