Basic Trigonometric Graphs

  •  y=sinx y=\sin x\

  •  y=cos xy=\cos\ x

  •  y=tanxy=\tan x

3

Slide image

This is a graph of  y=sinxy=\sin x  for  90°x360°-90\degree\le x\le360\degree

4

What about the others? How do they look like?

5

Your turn

Try all equations you can think of.

Enter the equations in the following website, and explore.

Don't forget to click on autoscale in settings.

Multiple Choice

When y=sinxy=\sin x  is transformed into  y=2+sin xy=2+\sin\ x , what happens to the graph?

1

Graph is shifted downwards by 2 units

2

Graph is stretched by 2 units, parallel to the y-axis

3

Graph is shifted upwards by 2 units

4

Graph is stretched by 2 units, parallel to the x-axis

8

Try again with Autograph

Explore what happens to the graph when you add or minus a constant.

9

10

Multiple Choice

When  y=sinxy=\sin x  is transformed into y=sin xy=-\sin\ x , what happens to the graph?

1

3

Graph is reflected in the x-axis

4

Graph is stretched by a factor of 2, parallel to the x-axis

11

Try again with Autograph

Explore what happens to the graph when you it becomes negative.

12

Multiple Choice

When y=sinxy=\sin x  is transformed into y=2sin xy=2\sin\ x , what happens to the graph?

1

Graph is stretched by a factor of  12\frac{1}{2}  , parallel to the y-axis

2

Graph is stretched by a factor of  12\frac{1}{2}  , parallel to the x-axis

3

Graph is stretched by a factor of 2, parallel to the y-axis

4

Graph is stretched by a factor of 2, parallel to the x-axis

13

14

Multiple Choice

When  y=tanxy=\tan x  is transformed into y=tan2 xy=\tan2\ x , what happens to the graph?

15

Try again with Autograph

Explore what happens to the graph when you multiply the function or the x in the function with a factor e.g. y=cos 12xy=\cos\ \frac{1}{2}x

16

17

Multiple Choice

When  y=sinxy=\sin x  is transformed into   y=sin (x+30)°y=\sin\ \left(x+30\right)\degree , what happens to the graph?

1

Graph is shifted by  30°30\degree  to the left

2

Graph is shifted by  30°30\degree  to the right

3

Graph is shifted by  30°30\degree   upwards

4

Graph is shifted by  30°30\degree  downwards

18

Try again with Autograph

Explore what happens to the graph when you add or minus an angle from the x function e.g. y=tan (x45)°y=\tan\ \left(x-45\right)\degree

In summary:

  •  y=f(x)+ay=f\left(x\right)+a  : Graph shifts upwards (downwards when minus) by a units.

  •  y=af(x)y=af\left(x\right)  : Graph stretches by factor a, parallel to y-axis

  •  y=f(ax)y=f\left(ax\right)  : Graph stretches by a factor of  1a\frac{1}{a}  , parallel to the x-axis

  •  y=f(x+c°)y=f\left(x+c\degree\right)  : Graph shifts to the left (right when minus) by  c°c\degree

  •  y=f(x)y=-f\left(x\right)  : Graph is reflected in the y-axis.

Take a look at this image carefully.

Take note of where the curve cuts the x-axis and y-axis. It is also helpful to note the maximum and minimum values.

The next slide, will require you to answer from this graph.

Question image

What is the equation of this graph?

1

y=3sin(x+60)°y=3\sin\left(x+60\right)\degree

2

y=3cos(2x+60)°y=3\cos\left(2x+60\right)\degree

3

y=2sin(3x+60)°y=2\sin\left(3x+60\right)\degree

4

y=3sin(2x60) °y=3\sin\left(2x-60\right)\ \degree
