Read for UNDERSTANDING, not for speed
Know when and how to find the meaning of a word - using more than a dictionary
Sometimes read something more than once
Read a variety of literature
And ACTIVATE their internal voice

Before reading
Good readers scan the text and use its appearance to help them know what the text is about.
Use prior knowledge, activate what you already know about the subject
Set a purpose for reading

During reading
Ask questions and monitor understanding.
Make connections between text and their life, the world, or another text.
Visualize, make mental pictures when reading by paying attention to sensory details in the text.
Making inferences and predictions, think, guess.
Word attack, figure out the meaning of new words by the context, suffix, prefix, root, etc.
Synthesize, use new information to change or confirm what they think the text is about.

During and after reading
Evaluate, form opinions about the text they read and use details from it to back it up.
Summarize, put into their own words the gist of what they've been reading.
Apply to life, look for messages to see how those ideas can influence their everyday life.
