Week 1: Indices

INDICES

A number in index form is of the form Xb ( b denotes power, index or exponent while x denotes base) where x and b are integers and x ≠ 0 . The plural of index is indices.

Laws of Indices

1.   Xa  x Xb = Xa+b

e.g (a) X4 x X2 = X5 +2 = X7

        (b) 3x4y-5 x -2x2y2 = 3 x -2 x X4 x X2 x y-5 x y2 = -6x6y3

Laws of indices

INDICES

1.   Xa ÷ Xb  = Xa-b

E.g (i) X6 ÷ X2 = X6-2 = X4

      (ii) 6y8z4 ÷ -2y3z3 = -3y5z

      (iii) = -3x3y4

2.   (Xa)b = Xax b

E.g (i) (X3)4  = X3x4 = X12

      (ii) (2x4y3)5 = 32x20y15

5

Laws of indices

1. X a/b = ( )b

(i)              25 3/2 = 125

(ii)        ( )2/3 =

2.  X-a =

E.g (i) 5-2 =

       (ii) ( )-3/2 =
