Week 1: Indices

INDICES

A number in index form is of the form X^b ( b denotes power, index or exponent while x denotes base) where x and b are integers and x ≠ 0 . The plural of index is indices.

Laws of Indices

1.   X^a  x X^b = X^a+b

e.g (a) X⁴ x X² = X^{5 +2} = X⁷

        (b) 3x⁴y^-5 x -2x²y² = 3 x -2 x X⁴ x X² x y^-5 x y² = -6x⁶y³

1.   X^a ÷ X^b  = X^a-b

E.g (i) X⁶ ÷ X² = X^6-2 = X⁴

      (ii) 6y⁸z⁴ ÷ -2y³z³ = -3y⁵z

      (iii) = -3x³y⁴

2.   (X^a)^b = X^{ax b}

E.g (i) (X³)⁴  = X^3x4 = X¹²

      (ii) (2x⁴y³)⁵ = 32x²⁰y¹⁵
