Ø We use while to connect the two actions happend at the same time.

For instance

1.I was watcghing T.V while my brother was doing his homework

2.We were playing while David was sleeping.

3.Steve was eating while while we were talking 

Past Proessive and simple past + while

Ø While, can go between the two actions or at the begging of the sentence.

When I use at the begging , we use a comma between the actions

1.Ana was Reading her book while the music was playing.

 

2.While the music was playing, Ana was Reading her book

Past Proessive and simple past + when 

We also use the past progressive to talk about a longer action that happend in the past which was interrupted by a shorter action.

for instance.

1. I was Reading in the garden when the pone rang

 

2. When Carlos was runing he fell
