Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like.

Its purpose is to give information, describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes.

Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception.

Descriptive text has its own rules in writing, including in the structure or composition of which must be written in order.

When writing descriptive text, there are some generic structures (actually not mandatory) for our writing to be true.

Identification:

Contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or object will be described. In this section of the first paragraph - the goal is to identify something to be described or depicted. Easy explanation, Identification serves to introduce the reader to the object or something that we have described before we tell about its properties.

Contains a description of something such as animal, things, place or person by describing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer describes. This section in the second paragraph and so on - contains the properties inherent in something that you already introduced to the reader in the first paragraph.

Language Feature of Descriptive Text

  • Specific participant: has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim

  • The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in Jepara, etc.

  • Make sure to choose a meaningful person, place, or thing.

  • Introduce the person, place, or thing you are describing. 

  • Engage your reader’s sense of sight.

  • Describe smells and tastes if you can.

  • Describe how the moment or item feels
