  • A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea.

    There are several kinds of nouns, including concrete and abstract nouns, compound and collective nouns, and common and proper nouns.

  • Today we will be looking at compound and collective nouns.

A compound noun is made up of more than one word. 

  • Compound nouns may be written as a single word (baseball), two words (home run), or with a hyphen (T-shirt). Always use a dictionary to check the spelling of an unfamiliar compound word.

A collective noun names a group of people or things. 

  • Important Note!

  • Collective nouns should NOT be confused with plural nouns. Collective nouns are written in singular form but refer to a quantity of more than one, while plural nouns use -s or -es at the end to indicate a quantity of more than one.
