What are Relative Clauses?

  • Relative clauses are dependent clauses that will give more information about a person, place, object, situation or possession.

  • Every relative clause must go after the previously mentioned, and it will talk about it.

  • The relative clause can begin with one of these words:

THAT / WHICH

  • If your use these words, you will describe an object or a situation.

  • Examples:

  • I want to buy the dress that I saw at the store.

  • She has a dog which loves to eat carrots.

  • Can you open the door that has a red sign?

WHO

  • If you use WHO as relative clause, you will refer to persons.

  • Examples:

  • Laura is the person who I was telling you about.

  • I need to find a man who respects my family and his.

  • Do you know the people who live next to you?

WHERE

  • If you use the relative pronoun WHERE, you will talk about a place.

  • Examples:

  • The building where I saw you is closed today.

  • I can't find the restaurant where we ate last week.

  • Walmart is the place where you can buy a variety of stuff.

WHOSE

  • Use the relative pronoun WHOSE to indicate possession.

  • Examples:

  • I know the woman whose dress is green.

  • Tell me whose bag this is.

  • I need to wash the cat whose owner seems very angry.
