Science 3 Quiz 1
Topic:
3 States of Matter
Special Properties of Solid, Liquid and Gas

2
3 States of Matter
Matter is made up of tiny particles called molecules.
Molecule is the smallest particle of a material which has its properties.
States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas
3
Solid
Molecules are held firmly
Molecules moves very slowly because they are very close together
Molecules are compressed so solids can keep their size and shape
Solids have definite shape and volume
4
Special Properties of Solid
Hardness - to resist scratching or abrasion Ex. diamond
Malleability - the ability of materials to be pressed, hammered, or rolled into various shapes and sizes without breaking Ex. gold
5
Special Properties of Solid
Brittleness - to be easily broken into pieces Ex. glass
Elasticity- to be stretched when pressure is applied Ex. rubber bands
Strength- determines how durable the material is Ex. metal
6
Special Properties of Solid
Ductile - is the ability of a solid material to deform under tensile stress
How it looks: Shiny or dull; color or pattern
What it does: Bounce, stretch, tear
How it feels: hard or sot; smooth or rough; round or flat; heavy or light
7
Liquids
Molecules are farther apart from each other
Molecules always move, roll, slide, or bump each other
Liquids can change shape
Liquids take the shape of their container
8
Properties of Liquids
Liquids may dissolve some solids.
Liquids that flow very slowly are described as viscous.
(Viscosity is the resistance of a liquid to flow.)
9
Special Properties of Liquids
Thin liquids
pour easily
they have less viscosity means the friction is less, hence faster flow rates
Ex. water, soy sauce, juice, etc.
10
Special Properties of Liquids
Thick liquids
do not pour easily
they have high viscosity means that the friction between two layers is high
liquid will flow slowly Ex. nectar
11
Gas
Molecules are farther apart
Molecules bounce off and move in every direction
Gases can change both their shape and volume
