10

How to make percentages fabulous. (Let’s do some math!)

  • 50%: half of _______.

  • 25%: a quarter / one fourth  (1/4) => 75%: three quarterS / three fourthS (3/4)

  • 33%: a third / one third => 66%: two thirdS

  • 20%: two in ten people/ about a quarter of ______

How about 89%?

13

For random percentages, round it up to the nearest "landmark" percentages.

  • 47%: just under a half / approximately one half

Let's talk about changes.

  • ↑↓5%: a minuscule amount / a negligible amount / an insignificant amount = a small amount

  • ↑↓ 20%: a significant amount / a remarkable amount = a big amount

  • 10% -> 20%: double (v) / a twofold (adj) increase (n). Example: The percentage of male students doubled to 20% in 1999. / The percentage of male students saw a twofold increase to 20% in 1999.

  • 10% -> 30%: triple (v) / a threefold (adj) increase (n).
