To refer to a person or a thing that you're mentioning for the first time. E.g. A man was seen driving a car.

Used with plural and singular nouns. E.g. I saw two houses. The houses were beautiful.

Before the names of certain public institutions and most newspapers. E.g. The Tambo Quirquincho museum is worth visiting.
With acronyms, when each letter is pronounced individually. E.g. The USA is one of the biggest countries in the world.
