Adjectives

The words that add details to nouns

2

Here's what adjectives basically do:

  • Tell you more about a person, animal, object, and anything else that can be considered as a noun.

  • They can be used to describe appearances, smells, tastes, sounds, amounts, ownership, and anything else that comes to mind.

  • Usually, adjectives are placed right behind a noun: small cat, angry dolphin, round Hambo.

  • But sometimes they can be placed after the nouns: he is sad, the fans are happy, the pancake was burnt.

3

Here's a few examples:

  • He is the fastest runner.

  • Black, hot coffee is my favorite drink.

  • Hambo's smelly cage needs to be cleaned right away.

  • Having loud neighbors makes it difficult for me to sleep.

  • I'm pretty sure that's a really expensive watch.

  • As you can see, you can use more than adjective for each noun.

What types of words can be used as adjectives?

  • Almost anything you can think of, as long as the words used help describe/add detail to a noun.

  • Participles can be used as adjectives: running water, rotten apple, burning building, etc.

  • Nouns too: sports car, history teacher, tennis shoes, etc.

  • Since there are thousands of adjective, we're not going to memorize all of them in this lesson. You'll find more and more of them as you read books, watch TV, listen to songs, play games, and more.
