Justification

We are justified and made righteous before God by faith in the redemptive work of Jesus at the cross.

2

Romans 3:9-20

No One Is Righteous

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;

11    there is no one who understands;

there is no one who seeks God.

12  All have turned away,

     they have together become worthless;

there is no one who does good,

    not even one.

13  “Their throats are open graves;

their tongues practice deceit.

“The poison of vipers is on their lips.

14  “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.

15  “Their feet are swift to shed blood;

16     ruin and misery mark their ways,

17  and the way of peace they do not know.

18  “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

No One is Righteous (Romans 3:9-10, 23)

  • Bible tells us that all have sinned. There is no one who can stand righteous before God.

  • We stand guilty before God of breaking His law, and we must be judged accordingly.

7

Righteousness Comes through Faith

(Romans 3:21-26, 5:18-19)

  • Because God is the 'righteous Judge of the whole earth', all who transgress His law will have to be punished due to He is just and righteous. No hope for anyone if God were to carry out His judgement.

  • But because God loves us, He found a way to redeem us, to help us escape from His judgement.

  • Someone else must take the punishment (die) onbehalf of us to satisfy the law. Then we will be declared right with the law because the charges has been removed (taken by the person who died onbehalf of us).

Romans 3:21-26

Righteousness Through Faith

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Righteousness Comes through Faith

  • Jesus' death has met all the legal requirements of the law of God that says that there is no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood. Hebrews 9:22 - In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

  • The word "justification" is a Greek term that is borrowed from the language of the law courts. It has the idea of declaring that something is legally proper.

  • Justification means that we are now declared righteous before God. It does not mean that God pronounces the ungodly to be godly or that we have changed in our sinful condition.

10

Righteousness Comes through Faith

  • Bible is very clear that we can only be justified by faith, not by works. Nothing we can do can ever make us righteous before God.

  • Therefore to be justified before God, we need to accept by faith what God has done for us through Jesus Christ (3:25-26).

  • It is a once-for-all act that brings the sinner into a right relationship with God.

  • The gift of salvation that God has given to us through Jesus His Son is free, It is of great value.

  • The Bible tells us that God took the initiative and did all the work for us through Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9)

  • We have saved through grace, not because of anything we have done. And for us to accept this gift, we have to receive it by faith. Our responsibility is to just take it and accept in faith that it is a gift for us.

  • When we therefore accept in faith all that Christ has done for us by His sacrifice at the cross, we will be justified once and for all in God's sight.

  • And by faith, we now claim all that God has promised us in Jesus Christ.

Justification

We are justified and made righteous before God by faith in the redemptive work of Jesus at the cross.
