Welcome to AP Physics 1!

by Mr. Flo

2

Who am I?

I'm Mr. Flo!

I've taught Chemistry and Physics for the past 3 years at Trident Tech's Palmer Campus.

I'm originally from Myrtle Beach.

I've always wanted to be a teacher!

I had similar schooling as you guys,

I had the ability to get my Master's in Teaching at 21 with transfer college credit from High School!

What I Hope For

You get a better understanding of...

  • applying math ideas in any scenario

  • your strengths and weaknesses going forward

  • what you want from life

  • how you can become better than you were yesterday

When you're building the next big skyscraper, piloting the next Mars Rover, or designing the next reusable rocket, just write "Flo" somewhere on it

6

What is AP Physics 1?

- AP Physics 1 is a Pre-Calculus based Physics Course

- This course is ideal as an introductory college course or a

pre-med physics course.

- Success in this class is guaranteed to raise your ACT and SAT scores.

- There are a TON of applications of Physics in STEM Careers

media

7

Course Structure

- In Canvas, there will be a unit outline posted describing what is planned for each unit on the Front Page.

- Quizzes are always announced. If there isn't a quiz scheduled, then ask me to do a homework problem instead

Four Components of Class

- Notes (Posted in the Front Page)

- Activity / Problem Solving Techniques

- In-Class Review Sessions before the exam

- Exam at the end of each unit!

    • Circular Motion

    • Projectile Motion

    • Relative Motion

  • Forces (Newton’s Laws)

  • Uniform Circular Motion

  • Energy

  • Momentum

  • Rotational Motion/Torque

  • Universal Gravitation

  • Simple Harmonic Motion

Covered in all Topics

  • Lab Writing

  • Problem Solving

  • Formula Derivation

How can we earn college credit?

By making a 3 or higher on the AP Exam.

Your AP Physics 1 test is 3 hrs long but it's worth 4 credit hours of University Physics (depending on the University)

11

What will the AP tests be like?

There are two Parts....

Multiple Choice Section

  • 50 questions

  • 90 minutes

  • Calculator

  • Formula chart

  • Types of Questions

    • Variables Only

    • Conceptual

    • Data interpretation

    • Multi-Response

Free Response Section

  • 5-7 questions, multiple parts

  • 90 minutes

Poll

Which type of question do you think has more point values on the AP Exam?

Multiple Choice

Free Response

13

How will we prepare?

Homework problems

  • Quizzes (MC and/or Free Response)

  • MC and FR on Tests (Each test will look like a mock AP C exam.)

  • Tests will be at the end of a unit.

    • 30-35 MC

    • 3-5 FR

  • Program formulas into your calculator as you go if you are able.  Get whatever calculator you will use for the test ASAP!!!

  • Make sure you bring your formula sheet and calculator to every classI will not print new formula sheets for you.

  • Built-in curve (on tests only) models AP scoring.

14

Wait.. A CURVE on TESTS?!

Turn in your homework on time

  • Make at least a 10/10 on your homework

  • Turn in all Labs/Activities

15

Multiple Select

Which of the following are required to qualify for a test curve?

1

Turn your homework in ON TIME

2

Make at least 10/10 points on your homework!

3

Turn in all Lab/Activities in on time!

4

None of the Above

16

What do our tests look like?

Here is my test recipe:

  • 30-35 MC AP 1 questions with Multi-Response

  • 3 AP Free Response Problems

    • 1 AP Problems (similar to Homework Packet, variable)

    • 1  AP Design your own experiment problem

    • 1-3 “Flo’s Choice”

    • Could be from a college test

    • OR any other textbook

    • Could be another AP, homework, or example problem

    • An AP like problem involving deriving equations

    • Paragraph Length Response Problem

17

Expectations_______________ __Pointers

Homework is done on a regular basis

  • Labs are written up individually

  • Study guides are completed before taking the exam

  • Doing classwork in class using Quizizz

  • You have to do problems to be successful.

  • You can’t cram for Physics.

  • Distractions mean you have to relearn all of the material on your own so keep those to a minimum.

  • Ask your teacher questions.  I will always help.

18

What else do I need to know?

  • You must be committed until May

    • Senioritis must be put off until after the AP test

  • Homework is due on test day but are welcome to be done early for giving feedback!

    • No late work will be accepted. Google Classroom/Canvas marks if it is late.

  • Quizzes are on the Unit Plan

    • They could be over the homework   OR They could be multiple choice (no calc and timed)

  • Tests are at the end of each unit.  This may conflict with other classes so please plan accordingly.

  • There will be Labs! I will give you a template and example to help guide you.

  • This course is math heavy. If you don’t like math or word problems, doing your homework or science in general, you should reconsider taking this class.

7 Required Write-Up Labs

20

What are the general classroom procedures?

  • Sign out to leave the room and sign back in upon return.

  • Cell phones go into the cell phone holder (If I see it out, I will ask for it and you can have it back at the end of the school day.)

Be respectful of others and our learning environment
