# Missouri River is the longest river in the United States.
#Begins in Western Montana and flows to the Mississippi River.

Rio Grande
Rio Grande is one of the principal rivers in the southwest United States and northern Mexico.
#begins in south-central Colorado in the United States and flows to the Gulf of Mexico.

Mississippi River
The Mississippi flows south through the middle of the United States.
#The mouth of the Mississippi is in the state of Louisiana, south of the city of New Orleans.

For centuries, the Mississippi River has been a very important route (path) for trade and travel.

Ohio River
#It flows northwest out of Pennsylvania and then turns southwest to join the Mississippi River in Illinois.

Hudson River
#The Hudson River flows through the U.S. state of New York from the Adirondack Mountains in the north to the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City. It empties into New York Bay after a journey of more than 300 miles . It is named for the English explorer Henry Hudson.

Hudson River
In the 1800s the Erie Canal and other waterways were built to allow ships to travel from the Hudson to the Great Lakes. This allowed trade to expand greatly.

Sierra Nevada has some of the highest peaks in the United States. #It runs along the eastern edge of California.

The Rocky Mountains are a large mountain range
# located in the western part of North America in the United States and Canada. The "Rockies" as they are also known, pass through northern New Mexico and into Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

Appalachian Mountains
The Appalachians extend almost 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers), from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador in the north to the U.S. state of Alabama in the south.
For early settlers who wanted to move from the territory of the original 13 American colonies to the west, the Appalachians served as a natural barrier.

Great Salt Lake
The largest inland body of salt water in the Western Hemisphere is the Great Salt Lake #in northern Utah.
The Mormon settlement in Utah in 1847 brought the lake into national awareness.
