What does it mean to make a prediction?
A prediction is a logical guess about what might happen in a story, what information a text might provide, or what points an author might make in an argument. Readers make predictions based on text evidence as well as their prior knowledge.
To make predictions, a reader may use text features, text structures, or genre characteristics. Text features are the parts of a text not in the main body, such as the table of contents, headers, and bold words, as well as visual elements such as photos, maps, and charts. Text structure is the order or pattern a writer uses to organize ideas or events. Genre characteristics are the qualities that define certain types of writing.
3
What does it mean to confirm predictions?
During reading, you use the text to confirm, or prove, a prediction. If a prediction is incorrect, you can modify or correct your prediction. This strategy helps to guide your reading, engage with the text, and improve your comprehension.
