​Why are properties of materials important?

Properties will help you decide which materials can be used for specific purposes as well as how to handle them with care.​

​​Corrosive materials can affect the skin and react with metals.

​Corrosives are materials that can attack and chemically destroy exposed body tissues. Corrosives can also damage or even destroy metal. They begin to cause damage as soon as they touch the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, digestive tract, or the metal.

Poisonous or Toxic materials can cause injury or death.

Toxic materials are substances that may cause harm to an individual if it enters the body. Toxic materials may enter the body in different ways. These ways are called the route of exposure. The most common route of exposure is through inhalation (breathing it into the lungs). Another common route of entry is through skin contact.

​Product Labels

​Product labels are intended to ensure the safety of the user.

They give the product ingredients (to which someone might be allergic).

​

They warn of possible dangers involving the misuse of the product.

​

They also describe the proper way of storing the product.
