Evaluating Expressions
I can substitute and evaluate expressions using the order of operations.
I can evaluate expressions involving absolute value.
I can evaluate expressions involving exponents and square roots.
2
Vocabulary
Substitute - replacing a variable with a number
Order of operations - an order agreed upon by all mathematicians (and math students!) that should be followed closely : 1. Parentheses 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication 4. Division 5. Addition 6. Subtraction
Evaluate - the process of simplifying by substituting and then solving using the order of operations
Absolute Value - a number's distance from zero (on a number line)
Thus, absolute Values are always positive!
Square root - the inverse of squaring a number
