Kinds of Rocks

2

Vocabulary

Conglomerate: A rock made up of several different materials, such as a rock made up of different kinds of rounded pebbles.

Igneous: Formed by great heat or actions of volcanoes.

Metamorphic: Description of something that has changed form; a rock that has changed from one form to another.

Sedimentary: Rocks formed as the result of eroded rock particles or minerals settling out of water.siltVery fine mineral particles.

3

Three TYPES OF ROCKS

Sedimentary: a rock that is formed by weathering, erosion, and deposition

Igneous: a rock formed from rapidly cooling magma

Metamorphic: a rock that has been changed from one form to another by heat and pressure

Sedimentary Rock

  • Forms in layers

  • Formed by erosion, weathering, and deposition

  • Shale: made of very tiny grains of clay

  • Sandstone: contains larger grains of sand (quartz)

  • Conglomerate: large pebbles, cobbles, or boulders (near rivers)

  • Limestone is formed from a dissolved mineral, calcite (lime).

Conglomerate rocks usually form:

1

in deserts

2

in forests

3

on beaches

4

near rivers

9

Igneous Rock

  • Formed by heat and pressure

  • Granite is a course-grained light colored rock which usually contains large crystals of quartz, feldspar, and mica.

  • Basalt is a dark, fine-grained rock which has few or no crystals large enough to see

11

Metamorphic Rock

  • When heat and pressure cause a rock to change from one form into another.

  • Both igneous and sedimentary rocks can be changed to metamorphic rock.

  • Marble: was once limestone.

  • Slate: was formed from shale.

  • Quartzite consists of nearly pure quartz
